"팀의 일원이 되어 커뮤니티를 위해 일하라."

"work for the community as a member"

SF교육원이 30일 트라이밸리장로교회에서 개최한 '한인청소년들을 위한 특강: 한계를 넘어서'에서 윌리엄 최 치의학 전문의(35, 스탠포드대 의학센터 임상교수)는 자신의 행복만 좇지 말고 커뮤니티 발전을 위해 일하라고 강조했다. 

Dr Choi William emphasized to not pursue for only own happiness, but work for the community.



한국에서 태어나 5살때 아르헨티나로 이민갔다가 15살에 다시 미국 LA로 오게 된 그는 낯선 곳에 정착할 때마다 인종차별과 언어장벽을 넘어야 했다. 

He was born in Korea, moved to Argentina when he was 5, and then moved to the States when 15. He needed to confronted the racism and the language barriers everytime he moves.

최 전문의는 "아르헨티나에서 동양인이라는 이유만으로 침을 뱉고 얼굴을 때리거나 버스에서 강제로 내리게 하는 인종차별을 겪었다"면서 "그런 사회를, 그런 사람들을 바꿀 수 없었지만 괴롭힘을 당한 약자들을 돕게 됐다"고 말했다. 

He experienced the rasism in Argentina- they spit on him, hit and forced him to gett off the bus only because he is Asian.

He can't change all those people but this exoerience led him help the minority in the society.



그는 "제대로 교육받지 못하거나, 동양인과의 접촉이 없어 두려워하거나, 사회적 압력(Social pressure)에 마지못해 따라하며 인종차별을 하는 이들도 있었다"면서 "그들을 이해하고 난 뒤에는 인종차별을 당해도 크게 괴롭지 않았고 오히려 그들과 친구가 될 수 있었다"고 밝혔다.

He said " there are some people who is not well-educated, nor well-guided might segregate the people because of the unfamilarity about Asian and social pressure", " After I iunderstand the behind the racism, rather, I bacame the friend of them"



최 전문의는 "미국은 세계에서 인종차별이 가장 적은 곳"이라며 "사람들을 존중(respect)하고 그들의 문화를 먼저 이해하려는 노력을 해야 한다"고 밝혔다. 그는 "돈은 인생의 중요한 가치가 아니다"라며 "사람들에게 좋은 영향을 미치고, 그동안 잘못된 것들로부터 교훈을 얻어야 한다"고 조언했다. 

He also mentioned that " USA is the country which the least segregate in the world", and "Everyone needs to make efforts to respect the people and the culture firstly".

He continued "money is the most important value, we need to inpire people and learn the lessons from the mistakes/flaws"



최 전문의는 2010년 샌리앤드로에 '벨 덴탈센터(Bell Dental Center)' 치과병원을 개원했고 이후 버클리, 뉴왁, 샌리앤드로에 3개 병원을 더 개원했다.

Dr Choi opened his dental clinic "Bell Dental Center" in San Leandro, and extended 3 more branches in Berkeley, New Wark.

그는 중증 정신지체 장애인, 기형아들의 치과치료를 월페어로 저렴하게 해주고 있다. 

He treated the minority people who have physical difficulties and disabilities at a lower rate.



그는 "치과의사는 돈을 벌려고 하면 할수록 돈을 벌 수 없고, 돈만 바라는 사람들은 더 못벌게 된다"면서 "환자들을 진심으로 대하고 남을 돕는 사명으로 기쁘게 생각해야 한다"고 말했다. 

He as a dentist trys to think that it is a honor to help people who are in need, and believes that dentist can't make much money if they just wan to make a lot of money.



이날 강연을 들은 한동규(도허티밸리고 10학년) 학생은 "리더가 되기 위해서 다른 사람들과 눈높이를 맞추라는 강사님의 이야기가 제일 기억에 남는다"면서 "치과의사의 꿈을 갖고 있는 나에게 많은 자극과 동기부여가 됐다"고 말했다. 

One of the students at the lecture, Donggyu Han said " being open mind to people in order to become the leader was impressive" and "my goal is to be a dentist and this lecture inspires me and motivates me in many ways"

 

최철순 SF교육원장은 "참된 리더가 되는 길을 제시한 오늘의 강연은 한인 청소년들에게 세상을 보는 시각을 넓혀주었다"면서 "앞으로도 유익한 강연을 기획하겠다"고 밝혔다.

Director Choi from Korean Education Center mentioned "today's lecture suggested the genuine way to be the true leader, and broadened the point of view for the teens"

이날 특강은 KPA(회장 박경화)와 한사모(회장 방민영)가 후원했다.
